Saturday will feel like any other meet for senior Hayley Nguyen.
But this powerlifting meet is a lot more important and it’s also her last high school competition.
“I’m excited because it’s my last one,” Nguyen said. “I went last year so I kind of expected to go this year.”
Nguyen will be Memorial’s lone representative at Saturday’s state powerlifting meet in Edinburg. Before spring break, she secured the title as the 114-pound regional champion, winning by 135 total pounds. Nguyen also set the deadlift regional record with a lift of 360 pounds.
Nguyen’s journey into powerlifting began when her volleyball coach encouraged her to try it. Since then, she has dedicated herself to building strength and staying committed to the sport.
One of her biggest challenges has been maintaining consistency in her training. Nguyen said it’s difficult getting into a routine and sticking to it.
This year, she also successfully moved down to a lower weight class while maintaining her lifting numbers, demonstrating her determination and discipline.
Before regionals, Nguyen focused on staying positive and eliminating negativity. This mindset helped her secure the regional title.
“I feel like I get in my head a lot so I was really just trying to stay positive,” she said.
Although making state might have come as a surprise to some, Nguyen and her coach had been counting on it.
“I was kind of already expecting it,” said Nguyen, who placed fourth at state last year. “I’ve been looking at my stats all year and seeing where I’m placed after every meet.”
Haylee also emphasizes the importance of supportive teammates for those interested in the sport.
“The people around you really help you,” she said. “If you have a good group, you’ll do better.”
Powerlifting coach Caleb Longest said Nguyen’s work ethic is unmatched.
“She’s always pushing herself and never gives up. Her dedication is inspiring,” Longest said. “She has the potential to go very far in this sport.”
