Against 70,000 other students and only the top two percent get selected, junior Harper Huckeby has made all-state choir.
“I did not think I’d make it,” Huckeby said. “I’m kind of hard on myself when it comes to my voice, but then I did and I’m very excited about it.”
Huckeby has put in work every day for this accomplishment. With help from choir teacher Melanie Coons, she’s improved at a rapid pace.
“We have just provided time after school when she wants to come in and practice,” Coons said. “I took her to camp over the summer so she could get started on it.”
Choir has been a part of Huckeby’s life since the seventh grade. She’s stuck with it all these years and has developed a love for it.
“I stuck with choir because of my love for Mrs. (Ayrian) Norman,” Huckeby said. “It’s a great environment and I love to sing.”
Huckeby left for the choir state competition in San Antonio on Wednesday. During state, Huckeby will be solo performing different pieces such as “The Battle of Jericho” by Moses Hogan and “Stardust” by B.E. Boykin.
“I’m most excited for ‘The Battle of Jericho,’” Huckeby said. “It’s literally the most fun song I think I’ve ever listened to, it always gets me hype.”
Coons believes Huckeby has come a long way from region and recognizes her commitment to rehearsing.
“Harper cares about what she’s doing and she makes it as important as anything else she has at school,” Coons said. “You can tell she spends a lot of her home time on it which is a big deal for this level.”
