Memorial’s girls basketball season has started as the Lady Mavs opened with losses against Lake Dallas and Jacksboro. They continue the season Friday at Iowa Park and are eager to get a win under their belt.
The Memorial Messenger sat down with coach Chris Reay to talk about the team’s goals and how they plan to have success this year.
Q: What are you most looking forward to for this season of Memorial basketball?
A: I’m looking forward to our youth developing, and just growing a program with all three teams, between varsity, JV red and JV blue. Just being fast on the floor.
Q: Have you developed any new coaching techniques for future teams or have they remained the same?
A: We’ve put in a new offense based off of our personnel where we’re mixing things up. Each team each year is going to be different, so we’re always going to adjust to the personnel that we have.
Q: If you could coach any basketball player in history, who would it be and why?
A: That’s a hard one. I’ve got my top five, but Dirk Nowitzki, Hakeem Olajuwon, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Q: What is your thought process during a game? Is it any different if it’s a tough game?
A: No. We want to be competing from start to finish every game.
Q: If you could give advice to any of the students who would like to play basketball, and possibly make it big, what would it be?
A: Work on your craft every day. It’s a never-ending process.
Q: Who are some of the key players of this year?
A: Our seniors, Addi Williams, Taeya Beard, Tori Beard. We’ve got some young freshmen coming in as well, and Addison Roberson, she’s a freshman who’s doing well.
