The theater department will be performing the musical ‘Mamma Mia!’ a 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday night along with a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee.
The cast and crew have been working since late January for the first musical this school has had, combining singing, dancing and acting all into one large production.
“From the very beginning seeing them go from blocking rehearsals to now running the scenes and the show, it’s been really cool to see how much work they put in outside of rehearsals,” director and theater teacher Zachary Jackson said. “I can tell they’re working on their lines, music and choreography.”
Different clubs and groups have come together to make this musical happen as well. The cast is filled with talented singers from choir and amazing dancers from dance classes.
“There are students that I had no idea could dance or sing that came and auditioned or said they want to help out,” Jackson said. “It’s really cool seeing kids I normally don’t have in the theatre doing theatrical productions.”
This show is filled with lots of energy and it’s hard work to get these scenes to perfection, but this group has grown so close that it’s practically a breeze.
“I think the best part of the show is the closeness of the cast and how we are able to naturally flow with the scenes,” junior Scarlett O’Hara, who plays Tanya, said. “It makes it really fun especially when we’re singing and dancing or when we have our own little ad-libs.”
For seniors like Phebe Atkins, who plays Sophie, this is the final theater production of their high school years making it sentimental to perform.
“I want to say I’m really happy that ‘Mamma Mia!’ is my last high school show and that I get the beautiful, amazing opportunity to play such a loved character,” Atkins said. “I feel pretty bittersweet about it.”
The theater organization is confident in their first show because of the connection shared and how much they support each other on and off stage.
“I’ve connected with the entire cast because everyone is so kind and talented and amazing,” Atkins said. “I just feel like we’re one big family.”
