The Memorial boys soccer team is off to a solid start as they’ve compiled a 2-2-1 record through the first week of the season. The Mavericks are coming off a 1-1-1 finish at the MSU Tournament this weekend where they beat Prosper Rock Hill 1-0 and tied Plano 2-2.
The Messenger sat down with coach Adam Jackson to discuss key players and expectations for the 2026 season.
Q: How has losing some key players affected your team?
A: We have had to go through a lengthy transition period figuring out the best formation and positions for the players we have this year. We don’t have the same experience so it’s been a slower start, but our boys are skilled and driven and we are close to getting it figured out.
Q: Who are some key returning players and are there any new varsity players who have impressed you?
A: Oscar Rueda, Pierce Elkins, Kenton Evans, Israel Cerna and Kameron Kimpler are key returners, but we have a handful of guys with varsity experience that will be thrust into bigger roles. Jackson Bohannon returning to soccer has been huge for us. He provides size, strength and leadership. Nic Calderon and Zach Bednarz are new to varsity soccer and have both played important minutes for us.
Q: What are your expectations for the season?
A: We expect to grow throughout the season and be the best version of ourselves come district. We started strong last year and maybe peaked to soon. We are hoping to be our best come district and go on a long playoff run.
Q: What do you think will be your biggest obstacles this season?
A: Staying healthy will be an obstacle. We have had all of our guys available for only one game. Consistency in play style and effort is always hard considering how many games we play.
Q: What are your impressions after the first games?
A: We have the guys to win and perform. If our mentality is right and we are bought in each game, we are a team that will be able to compete with anyone.
Q: If you had to describe your team in three words, what would they be?
A: Anyone any day.
