As the school year quickly approaches, many students are feeling a multitude of different emotions: excitement, nervousness and maybe even a mixture of both.
Last week during orientation, many students got their first looks at Memorial High School and the reactions were overwhelmingly positive.
Senior Mariah Dixon described seeing Memorial High School as an “unreal” experience and even stated that “she never thought she would get a chance to a school that looks as great as Memorial.”
Sharing a similar sentiment to Dixon, junior Kyle Paris was “amazed” by how big the school was and stated that he enjoyed the fact that Memorial was a “clean and roomy” school that offered many new opportunities for WFISD students.
While students enjoyed getting to view Memorial High School, feelings of nervousness were present as well.
Senior Emma West, who had attended Old High for the past three years, was nervous about the feelings of unfamiliarity that come with attending a new school.
“I’m most nervous about having new teachers and experiencing unfamiliarity compared to being at the same school the past three years,” West said.
Additionally, while Kyle Paris was amazed by how big the new school was, he viewed it as both a blessing and a curse. Paris described how although he considered Memorial to be an “upgrade” he worried about “how big the school was and if passing periods between classes would be long enough.”
Although students felt conflicting feelings of both excitement and anxiety toward entering a new high school, many students shared a positive feeling about building a new high school with a new, spirited student body.
Freshman Addi Wineinger described her excitement over “dressing up for school spirit days, pep rallies, and football games.”
Similarly, West described how she was most looking forward to “watching all the different sports and seeing all the new school spirit come together.”
Although there is a still some uncertainty headed into the school year, students showed mutual excitement about being the first group of students at Memorial High School and getting to set the tone for the school’s optimistic future.
