Matthew Addison isn’t your average cheerleader.
He doesn’t wear a skirt. Nor does he hold pom-poms during a football game.
What Addison does is backspot the girls and participate in their flips and tumbling routines.
Addison is Memorial’s only male cheerleader among 29 students, but the junior doesn’t think it’s that big of a deal. He joined the cheer team after talking with former coach Danlee Duncan last year.
“Coach Duncan gained 40 pounds of muscle in four months and I wanted to get that,” Addison said. “Flip-wise too, I’ve been doing flips all my life.”
Addison doesn’t have to worry about finding a place to change and he’s learned how to get along with everyone.
“I’m already ready,” Addison said about having to change. “I don’t have to do hair or makeup. I’m just nice to the girls.”
Along with his kindness, his skills are recognized by multiple coaches. Addison is the backbone of his team due to his abilities and strength. Coaches appreciate his upbeat attitude and sportsmanship.
“Matthew is an incredible back spot for stunts as well as a talented tumbler,” Sapphire coach Faith Patterson said. “He is a huge team player and supporter, but definitely the team comedian.”
Addison continues to work hard for himself and the team. He lifts the team’s spirits by being a supporter and making laughs. He’s opened up new doors for current and future students alike.
“Matthew has truthfully set the tone for what a high school male cheerleader can be,” Patterson said. “I hope that other students at Memorial see the endless possibilities and are encouraged to put themselves out there to try new sports or organizations.”
