Like most seniors at this time of the year, Kenji Johnson has been busy trying to choose which college they want to attend.
However, Johnson is trying to figure which college football offer he wants to accept before National Signing Day on Feb. 5.
Besides being a student and a football player, Johnson is also a father so he has to think of options that most people who are signing don’t have to think of.
Dealing with fatherhood, football and school isn’t easy, but Kenji makes it work.
“It’s just a transportation thing, making sure she is taken care of and then going to school and football. But with the coaches in that perspective, they’ll work with you,” Johnson said. “They’ll help you out, do whatever they need to do.”
Johnson has received texts from about 20 different coaches in the last few days. Among the seven schools who have offered are Midwestern State, East Central, Central Oklahoma and Hardin-Simmons. Johnson is also hoping to get an offer from Division I Abilene Christian, where he will soon visit.
Johnson doesn’t have a dream college, he is more focused on securing the best scholarship offer that will ensure his future is financially stable. He has visited MSU and Hardin-Simmons.
“I just want my college to be paid for so I wouldn’t be in debt in the future,” Johnson said.
Johnson is still considering his academic path, but he’s leaning toward business.
“I’ve talked to my coaches and they said if you’re not sure, instead of changing your major, just go undecided the first year,” Johnson said. “But I think I want to branch off into business.”
Johnson is expecting to make a decision after this weekend. However, signing day isn’t until next Wednesday.
When it comes to choosing a school, Kenji is thinking about what’s best for his daughter and him.
“I don’t think about letting the coaches out or anything,” Johnson said, “I think about what’s best for me and what’s the better choice for me and my daughter.”
