As homecoming is getting closer day by day, students have said the excitement is increasing.
A new school entails new traditions, one of them is the homecoming court and the election of the queen and king of the high school. Twenty nominees chosen by seniors are waiting for the voting that will make two of them the first queen and king of Memorial High School.
The decision of having the traditional homecoming queen and king came from the spirit committee, which constituted Memorial students who attended Rider, Hirschi and Wichita Falls High School. The committee discussed what parts of their old high schools they liked and what new traditions they wanted to bring.
“They all took a little bit from all the schools, they wanted to do a bonfire, that came from Old High and Hirschi,” assistant principal Misty Speer said. “They wanted the homecoming court which was new, but they did have Miss Raider and Mr. Raider, which was a tradition similar to the king and queen in Rider High School. Also the parade, that came from Old High. They wanted to carry those traditions from each school and create something new.”
After the last voting process, the first queen and king of the Memorial High School will be crowned before Friday’s homecoming game begins. Voting will take place Monday through Thursday next week with the entire student body getting a chance to cast their vote.
Multiple nominees were excited about being named a nominee. Trae Steele said it would be cool to be the first king of the high school.
Speer said there are many traits a homecoming queen and king should have.
“They should be excellent representatives of the student body, they should be disciplined and they should be really involved, like well-rounded students,” Speer said. “They should be involved in different organizations, they kind of leave their mark throughout the school.”
Students, teachers, principals and staff members in charge of this event have been working really hard because everyone is excited about this new tradition.
