The Memorial High School girls basketball season has just started as the Mavericks are 1-1 after beating Bellevue and losing against Dumas. They play their third game Saturday at Lake Dallas.
The Memorial Messenger sat down with head basketball coach Chris Reay to talk about preparations, the future of Memorial’s first basketball team and what it takes to start a program from scratch.
Q: What have been the challenges of getting a brand new basketball team started?
A: Just teaching all the concepts and principles and the system. Just teaching everybody a brand new thing has been a bit of a challenge.
Q: What are you most looking forward to for the first year of Memorial basketball?
A: I am looking for the girls to grow and learn from game to game to reach their potential.
Q: What are the players that have impressed you the most?
A: Senior Tay Parks, junior Olivia Vanderburg, junior Addie Williams. They’ve all done really well and they’re picking things up and playing really well.
Q: How do you feel about your team going into this new season?
A: I feel confident that we have the right pieces in play to have a successful season.
Q: What are the games that you are looking the most forward to?
A: The rivalry game versus Legacy will be a good one. That’ll be fun for everybody. So I’m looking forward to that one.
Q: What are the goals that you want your team to accomplish this year?
A: To stay positive, to stay together as a team. Two big ones.
Q: What do you think will be the biggest challenges for your team this year?
A: To stay as one from start to finish in a game. To always be together.
