Memorial color guard instructor Elise Wolf said her associates and her team are working hard to make the first year a successful one.
The theme of Memorial’s first marching season is the French Revolution with the show being called, “The Good Life.” The show has three different movements that convey the story of the French Revolution for the crowd.
The color guard uniform for their show inspired in the French Revolution symbolizes the high-end fashion often found in Paris.
“Our makeup also tries to follow the high-end fashion, but does not really stick to Paris themes,” Wolf said.
The first Memorial marching season is about to finish and color guard is excited to train for their winterguard season. Competitions are usually in the Dallas area and are much more frequent during the winter.
“I am really looking forward to winterguard because I get to create the whole show and see my visions come to life.” Wolf said. “I get to do every little girl’s dream of being a fashion designer, a dancer, a choreographer, coach, a teacher all while spinning a flag, rifle or sabre.”
The color guard team works really hard to make the shows pleasant to the audience and to perfect their movements.
One of the most difficult parts of dancing with flags is being aware of what your body is doing as well as the flag. It’s not like holding a stick in your hand.
“As cheesy as this sounds, the flag becomes part of your body and you have to understand what every part of you is doing in order to not get injured as well as successfully add value to the show,” Wolf said.
Wolf, who graduated from Rider in 2020, said the students work hard and are extremely teachable.
“They are also curious and creative, they want to keep growing in their skills here,” Wolf said. “And they love to share jokes and have fun. They are truly an amazing group.”
The members of the color guard really appreciate the friendship and the companionship of their teammates.
“I like the friendships that they make,” senior Madison Dishman said. “I like the memories we make in color guard and the friendships we build.”
