College application processes can be a hard and stressful task sometimes for seniors. Taking the SAT or ACT tests is also difficult but necessary for future college applications and scholarships.
Kaitlyn Nolan is Memorial’s college and career advisor. Nolan is happy to help all the students at the high school, guiding them in achieving their goals and career aspirations.
Lots of students are preparing now for the SAT and PSAT exams that will take place next week at Memorial High School. The PSAT will be held Wednesday and the SAT will take place Thursday. Nolan said students will need report to the auditorium at the start of first period.
“The test will be under way by 8 a.m. and those late will not be allowed in. The test should be over by fifth period, or second lunch at the latest,” Nolan said. “If students have their own school assigned a Chromebook, they should bring it with them. If not, we will provide testing for Chromebooks.”
The sign-up for the exams is already closed, but there is another opportunity for juniors to take the exam in March. The dates will be announced later in the school year.
There are also some possibilities to take the ACT and SAT exams at Midwestern State.
“All of the SAT dates and ACT dates that are given at MSU on Saturday, so those are all listed on the Class of 2025, Class of 2026, Google Classroom, and it’s got the deadlines on that sheet as well,” Nolan said. “You just go to classwork and then scroll down to testing and look at either the SAT testing dates or the ACT testing dates, and they’ve got all the registration deadlines and everything and where it’s at”
If you are a senior, you should be working on your college applications.
“Most of the colleges have opened their applications already,” Nolan said. “Some of our junior community colleges haven’t opened up, and they’ll open up in the spring, but most of them have opened up, so if they know where they want to apply, they can go ahead and start working on those applications.”
There are some different ways to apply to colleges.
“There’s a couple different portals that can be used to get on and do multiple applications at once, like Apply Texas or like the Common App,” Nolan said. “There are some schools that have their own application just through their own website.”
Nolan knows how stressful it can be going through the application process. She gives her advice and her support to all the seniors of Memorial High School.
“Best advice is to get started on college applications. Most of them are not as difficult as you would think,” Nolan said. “A lot of schools don’t even require an essay anymore. They’re going to look at your GPA. But just don’t be scared. Get started on them. They’re not as scary as they think.
“And if they need help with anything, make an appointment with our office, and we will help you get going and get started and all that kind of stuff.”
