Josh Burris has been a trainer for six years. He used to be a trainer at Wichita Falls High School, but now he is one of three trainers at Memorial High School.
The Memorial Messenger asked him questions about how he deals with the heat, most common injuries and the new training room.
Q: What is the hardest part of your job as an athletic trainer?
A: Having to tell an athlete that their season or career is over.
Q: With it being so hot recently, what precautions do you have to take because of the heat?
A: The UIL uses the wet bulb scale which takes into account many factors to determine the heat isn’t too hot outside. Along with lots of water and cool down stations as needed.
Q: What would be the most common injury that you see?
A: An ankle sprain or a bruise are the most common.
Q: How do you like the new training room?
A: The new training room is awesome. It has a lot more space double the size of the Old High one, and we’re just waiting on our new equipment.
Q: What time does your day usually start?
A: Whenever there is practice. I’ve been up at the school as early as 5:30. And now that school has started, I get here about 6:30.
Q:How does having a third trainer help?
A: There’s not a number of athletic trainers you can put on anything. The more hands, the better. One of them can do paperwork while the other two tape up athletes. It’s huge for the football games.
