Senior Madison Dishman has been in color guard ever since her freshman year. She completed two years at Rider and is now a senior at Memorial.
Dishman is looking forward to continuing her guard journey and passion as she begins her second year as captain in color guard. The Memorial Messenger sat down with Dishman for senior night to ask some questions about how color guard has changed her over the years and what she is most excited for this upcoming school year.
Q: Why did you join color guard?
A: I joined it because I had a neighbor who was selling Raider cards with her flag. I thought that it was cool, and because I didn’t play any sports, I thought guard looked interesting so I decided to give it a try.
Q: What are you most excited for this year?
A: I’m excited for it being my last year. I just want to go out with a bang my senior year.
Q: What is the most difficult part about being in color guard?
A: Trusting the process. In the beginning, you could feel very rushed and may feel that things won’t come together, but in the end everything will be fine.
Q: What is your favorite part about being in color guard?
A: My favorite part is definitively the behind the scenes and the connection you make with the team.
Q: What do you want to accomplish your senior year, both personally and within the color guard?
A: In color guard, I want to try new tricks that I was once scared to do. Personally, I just want to get through the year.
Q: What is one thing you will miss once you leave?
A: I’m going to miss seeing the sunrise during practice every day before school starts.
Q: How has color guard changed you since your freshman year and why?
A: I definitely think I have more discipline and more pride in what I do now than I did when I started.
