London Boyd is one of two drum majors for the Maverick marching band.
London Boyd has been in band for all four years, starting off with being a clarinet player for the first two years at Rider. Boyd became a section leader her third before ending her senior year with leading the band as one of two drum majors.
The Memorial Messenger sat down with Boyd before Friday’s senior night for an interview about what it’s like being a drum major for the Memorial Mavericks Band.
Q: Why did you decide to be a drum major?
A: Because I thought that leading the band would be fun. I get to be more involved with everyone and I get to help more people out.
Q: What has been your favorite part of being a drum major overall?
A: Probably getting to know every section because when I was a section leader, I was more confined to the clarinets, but now I’m around everyone so it’s better.
Q: What’s been the most challenging part of this role for you?
A: Probably just the pressure of having to keep tempo and having to remember the music and stuff. Remembering where I’m supposed to be conducting and stuff like that.
Q: In what ways have you grown since your freshman year in band?
A: I’ve become more of a leader I would say. I stepped out of my comfort zone and helped more people.
Q: Do you have a favorite band memory?
A: I don’t know. I’d have to think about it. I would just say singing on the bus.
Q: What are your plans for after graduation?
A: Go to UNT and study forensic science because I’m interested in crime.
