Memorial defensive lineman Micah James chases down the Frenship quarterback during a football game last week. James finished with five sacks in the victory.
Senior Micah James is coming off a monstrous five-sack game last week in a win against Frenship. The five sacks are believed to be a WFISD single-game record.
The Memorial Messenger had a chance to talk to James before his senior night about his time playing football, how he’s grown as a player and how his final season has gone so far.
Q: What’s been the best part of being a senior, both at school and on the football field?
A: You’re a leader. All the young people look up to you. Like if you’re on varsity, they know you, and just go around and talk to the young people. I used to be the one looking up to them when I was a freshman. Now it’s different because I’m the one everyone is looking up to.
Q: What’s been your favorite part of being here at Memorial football?
A: The new program, all the new things really. You meet a lot of new people, coming together, playing together, new coaches, just meeting new people. It really has been the best.
Q: How have you grown as a football player from your freshman year?
A: A lot of it has been just being consistent, you know. Going to the gym, getting up every morning, being motivated, handling your business and working hard.
Q: How has the season gone, specifically for you and in general?
A: The first two games have gone good for me, and it’s been a pretty good start as a team. We can keep it going.
Q: What are you going to miss the most next year?
A: I’m going to miss all the bonds I made with friends, teachers and all of my teammates.
Q: What do you plan on doing after graduation?
A: I want to go to college, play ball, get my education and I want to have my own welding business after college.
