Joe Castles was named Memorial’s homecoming king Friday before the football game against Frenship.
But Castles had a much more action-packed night as just hours later, he dove into the end zone, scoring the winning touchdown.
Castles said that out of all the homecoming events, the Mavericks’ 33-26 win over Frenship was his favorite.
“Because it was a crazy one,” he said. “It was one to remember for sure, especially beating Frenship.”
Castles and Angelina Gutierrez were honored before the game as Memorial’s second-ever king and queen. When Gutierrez was crowned queen at homecoming, she couldn’t have been happier.
“I was in shock,” Gutierrez said. “I had no words.”
Gutierrez has been involved in several activities during high school, including FFA, swim, cross country, basketball, student council, FCA and key club. Her favorite memory of homecoming week was the dress-up days. Her favorite dress-up day was Throwback Thursday.
Castles is planning on going to college for football where he will follow in his brother’s footsteps.
“I plan on going to ACU to play football there,” Castles said. “I recently committed not too long ago and I’m very thankful and excited to go there.”
Gutierrez said wants to go to college so she can become a veterinarian and help sick or injured animals.
Castles and Gutierrez were two of 20 Memorial seniors honored in the homecoming court. They were recognized at the Tailgate, pep rally and before the game.
This year started off with a bang as homecoming was early in the year. Having an early homecoming definitely threw some people off, but the football team didn’t mind as it pulled out the win against a tough opponent.
