Since she was a child, Lorelei Mitchell has looked up to her father and grandfather, sharing their interest in scouting.
Her dad worked with scouts for about 13 years and she grew up in the local Scout camp.
Lorelei had always wanted to be a scout, so when Cub Scouts opened the program up to females in 2019, her dad let Lorelei know.
“Do you want to be a boy scout,” he asked.
Lorelei said “yes” as fast as never before.
Mitchell became the first girl to join the Northwest Texas Council when she was a Cub Scout. Now, after years of hard work and dedication, the Memorial junior has earned the title of Eagle Scout, the highest attainable rank.
“Being the first Cub Scout was a little bit scary because I had to forge into that trail,” Mitchell said. “But I’m glad I can look back on where I am now and be like, ‘Wow, I’ve made it to the top of the mountain. I’ve reached the peak of scouting.’”
Mitchell has had a lot of different positions throughout the years in her troop. She has been the representative of her troop for a long time.
“I was the SPL back in 2021. I’ve had many positions, now I’m an Eagle Scout.” Mitchell said. “I’ve worn many hats.”
Mitchell enjoys being outdoors, camping and the community that she has helped build.
“The girls I found the troop with, they’re all gone,” Mitchell said. “But I still have the girls that are in the troop now. And it’s kind of incredible to see everyone band together the same way.”
Mitchell had to do a project to earn her title of Eagle Scout which had to pass through the board, which is at the council’s office. She had to sign up and the board had to approve her project.
“What I did is I raised an archer platform out at Northwest Texas Field and Stream,” Mitchell said. “The entire thing is built out of metal. It’s 10 feet tall from base to platform.”
After she received board approval, she was interviewed about her project and herself. The board discussed the decision for some time and they went to tell the good news to Mitchell.
“They were like congratulations, you are an Eagle Scout,” Mitchell said. “It didn’t really set in until like a week ago. I was pretty happy because this is what I’ve been wanting to do for 5-6 years.”
Now that she is an Eagle Scout, Mitchell wants to help with the projects that other girls will be doing for their Eagle Scout. She also wants to focus on her career as a Scout, too.
“Now that I’m an Eagle Scout, the next step is to go to venturing, which is like a subsidiary program of scouting and get my silver award over there,” Mitchell said.
